Connie Kaldor’s song ‘Spring on the Prairies’ from her Wood River album says it well for this time of year: 

“Spring in the prairies comes as surprise. One minute there’s snow on the ground, the next there is sun in your eyes. Winter stays so long seems like it always has been, ain’t it nice to see that rain and feel that warm wind…”

This past week there are so many signals of spring that never fail to surprise: the brilliant but tiny almost-beneath-notice purple flower of the beaked hazel nut bush, the croak of the spring peeper frogs, the thump of the ruffed grouse, and the warmth of soil underneath last year’s leaves.

The cycle of new growth has begun!
