About Us

Windhover concepts is inspired by a sonnet written in 1877 by Gerard Manley Hopkins titled "The Windhover". Gerard’s poem describes the graceful winged flight of a windhover or hawk as it hunts across the sky; it was published 37 years after his death in 1914 and is one of his most celebrated pieces of writing.

Like the explorations or concepts that we undertake on this landscape, the poem explores the beauty of the natural environment and offers a glimpse of what we may feel when we are able to connect to forest, fields, water and animals  – “… my heart in hiding, stirred…”

Windhover began simply as a conversation around a kitchen table. We imagined what it would be like if we could do projects that created a sense of creative beauty and spoke to our hearts.

Since 2010, we have actively been exploring sustainable agriculture initiatives at Windhover. The farm sits on a quarter section of land, includes just under an acre of deer fenced orchard and vegetable gardens along with a 0.7 acre flower field and hopyard.

The farm sits on a quarter section of rolling parkland/boreal landscape/tame pasture collaboratively operated by two sisters (Catherine and Karin) and their families.

Beginning as little children we learned to live with the forest.

What we learned then by experience is, what we understand as adults, a long lesson in observing and knowing-by-working-with the interconnection of an ecosystem, the forest and all its plants and creatures including ourselves.

Windhover began as a heartfelt idea, and has grown through community connections and activities: establishing Alberta’s first commercial hop yard for the micro-brewing beer community in Alberta; growing a small apple orchard, planting European basket-making willows, and creating a flower field all with the support of the community of friends and family.
